Floods, landslides kill dozens in Indonesia and Timor-Leste

JAKARTA: Flash floods brought on by torrential rain early on Sunday (Apr 4) have killed 23 folks on Indonesia’s island of Flores. Nine extra are injured and 5 are lacking, whereas the tiny neighbouring nation of Timor-Leste has reported eight deaths thus far. 

At least 49 households have been affected on the island within the east of Indonesia’s sprawling archipelago, Raditya Jati, a spokesman for catastrophe administration company BNPB, stated in a press release.

“Dozens of houses were buried in mud in Lamanele village … residents’ houses washed away by the flood,” Raditya stated, referring to the jap a part of Flores.

On Adonara island to the east of Flores, a bridge collapsed and rescuers have been battling heavy rain, sturdy wind and waves, he added.

In neighbouring Timor-Leste, eight folks have been killed in a landslide on the outskirts of the capital, Dili, state information company Tatoli stated.

“We are currently focusing on elderly victims, children and pregnant women to be taken to a safe place,” it quoted Joaquim Gusmao, the state secretary for civil safety, as saying.

A two-year-old little one was among the many victims, a Reuters witness stated. Civil safety officers couldn’t instantly be reached for remark.

Power provides have been minimize and the presidential palace was flooded as heavy rain and powerful winds have lashed Dili since late on Saturday.

More bitter climate threatens.

Indonesia’s climate company stated a tropical cyclone was approaching the Savu Straits between the southern a part of Nusa Tenggara province and Timor-Leste’s north coast, warning that it may deliver but extra rain, waves and winds.
